Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate,
gives his take on this week's big political stories—
7 million (and counting) Obamacare enrollments and
the new House GOP budget delivered by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan:
You’re not going to turn away seven or 10 million people from insurance coverage — doesn’t work anymore. And then comes Ryan. Thank you, thank you Congressman Paul Ryan, for reminding us what Republicans would do if they had control.
The news is only going to get better on Obamacare, because in addition to the 7 million and counting who have enrolled in plans, there are also new Medicaid enrollments as well as young people who can get insurance through their parents. Meanwhile, for Republicans, the only really good news is that Ryan's plan won't actually become law. It's tough enough to defend the proposal in theory—in practice it would be impossible. Turns out, helping people get affordable, reliable health care is a lot more popular than gutting Medicare and cutting food stamps.
