Update: I'll put this above the fold because it's just too important. Chili's cancels their NAA fundraiser due to customer complaints.

Now, I take absolutely no credit for this - the news of the fundraiser has been everywhere. But it just goes to show you that a bunch of pissed off folks can, indeed, change things. Maybe there is hope for us yet.

(and my condolences to the poor marketing person who undoubtedly was fired today)

Now, the original diary below...

Yes, folks... one more reason to never ever eat at Chili's (besides the food).

In honor of National Autism Awareness Month, Chili's is planning to donate 10% of customers' checks on April 7 to the National Autism Association, a charity with controversial views about vaccinations.
Controversial? Really? Follow me below the orange outbreak map to find out how your dining choices can keep people like Jenny McCarthy employed...

Who is the National Autism Association? Asshats.

And I quote...

Based on parent reports – including parents representing the National Autism Association – sharp regression occurred in their children directly following immunizations.
Now, I don't usually write diaries here based on pure outrage, but this kills me. No really, this can kill me... and you... and your kids.

Think I'm being hyperbolic? Take a gander at this Map. Go ahead - click on your part of the world... I'll wait... What? Can't find your neck of the woods under all those green dots? Blame the asshats.

Now, before you think I'm only looking at one side of this story, Chili's spokescritter has responded...

Thank you for reaching out to us. At Chili's Grill & Bar, we're about making every guest feel special and pride ourselves in giving back to our communities. When choosing a charitable partner for our Give Back Events, both locally and nationally, we are committed to supporting organizations dedicated to helping children and their families.

The intent of this fundraiser was not to express a view on this matter, but rather to support the families affected by autism. Our choice to partner with the National Autism Association was based on the percentage of donations that would go directly to providing financial assistance to families and supporting programs that aid the development and safety of children with autism. We sincerely appreciate your feedback around this Give Back opportunity and will share your comments with the appropriate individuals within our organization.

Chili's Guest Relations

So they know about the asshats and they don't care. Let that sink in for a moment...

Sunk? Let's dig a little deeper into the PR-speak... (bold is mine)

The intent of this fundraiser was not to express a view on this matter
View? Science is an opinion? Let's ask those opinionated folks at the CDC...
A new study evaluating parents’ concerns of “too many vaccines too soon” and autism has been published online in the Journal of Pediatrics [PDF - 256 KB] , March 29, 2013. It adds to the conclusion of a 2004 comprehensive review by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) that there is not a causal relationship between certain vaccine types and autism.
Nice science-y opinion you've got there. Too bad our society no longer believes that science is the best way we have to know about reality.

I just can't anymore... Vent in the comments...

11:50 AM PT: ETA: Rec list? Wow - thanks for helping me get the word out.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
