Republicans claim they're not worried about voting against the Paycheck Fairness Act, because voters are totally going to see through the Democrats being all transparent and stuff, putting forward a bill that's good politics as well as good policy in a shameless attempt to pander for votes. But for not being worried, they sure are pushing back aggressively; you can't swing a dead cybercat over at Politico and similar Beltway media sites without coming across a quote from a Republican explaining just how worried they aren't, and how they totally support equal pay of course but just don't want to do anything about it.

If all those elected Republicans rushing to tell you how little it all matters didn't convince you, the site of Fox News spinning frantically on equal pay might do the trick. Here, two of its hosts couldn't talk fast enough as they threw a series of possible "innocent" explanations for the wage gap against the wall to see what would stick. Melissa Francis may have found the winner:

I would also point out that men lost jobs at two and a half times the rate as women in this last recession. I know plenty of families where the man is now out of work and the woman is the one who's working full time. Probably because she makes a little less, so she was able to keep her job.
Gosh, that's real comforting. It's not accurate, as Media Matters points out—actually, men are more likely than women to be in occupations that are sensitive to shifts in the economy—but imagine if it was true. Women across the country would be sitting there, unable to afford enough food, but feeding their very souls with this thought. In case that one didn't persuade you, though, here are a few other Fox-approved explanations for unequal pay:
  • "No two people are the same, no job is the same ... different people make different decisions and look for different things in a workplace." Different people, different decisions, but funny how consistently it shakes out according to gender, eh?
  • "It is a fact that there are more men who are engineers, more men who are in these higher-paying jobs typically, and that's just a statistically true fact." A Statistically True Fact, mind you. And there's absolutely nothing to be said about the fact that male-dominated occupations just happen to pay more than female-dominated occupations. Let's move right along!
  • "Is this being used as a political ploy by Democrats, because it worked for them last time around?" How dare Democrats use reality as a political tool!

Way to convince us this issue doesn't worry you, guys.

        There is an interesting chart on p.17 of the AAUW report, Graduating to a Pay Gap.  It shows that for STEM-related occupations--math, computer, physical and life sciences, and engineering--there is no gender pay gap one year after graduation.  There is also no gender pay gap in nursing and other health care occupations, which are historically female-dominated  Also interesting is that the average salary for nurses (93% of whom are women) was almost identical to the average salary of math, computer, and physical science occupations (76% of whom are men), which dispels the myth that historically female dominated occupations are low-paying.

        The biggest gender pay gaps are in sales, business, and other white collar occupations.  In my experience, these are precisely the fields where one is likely to run into the most bigoted, backwards thinking men in management positions--for example, I have rarely met a sales manager who wasn't kind of a dick.

        Overall--keeping in mind that the study was looking at earnings one year after graduation with a bachelor's degree--the pay gap between men and women that could not be explained by relevant factors including "occupation, economic sector, hours worked per week, multiple jobs,
        months unemployed since graduation, undergraduate GPA, undergraduate major, undergraduate institution sector, institution selectivity, age, region of residence, and marital status" was 7%.

      that just having any job is a blessing, no matter how poor the pay and how lousy the hours and (if any) benefits.

      On another note, how many f^@|in years has it been since salary studies found that women were earning getting paid 75% relative to men doing the same job?

      And why hasn't any real progress been made?

      The answer to the second question is easy, just like 'Old Left Good Left' said above,

        Just found out the other day that a friend intentionally sent an anti-union idiot over to talk to me.  Then he stood back and enjoyed the show as I verbally cleaned her clock.  He says he hasn't seen her at that park since.  I have to admit it did me more good than a year's worth of therapy could.  She didn't know it, but she was the stand-in for all the Gopers I'd love to tear into.  I'm a 5ft tall woman----just so you know it was a fair fight.

    We are progressively fighting for the fairness and equality in that if you have the same job description as your male counterpart you must receive the same pay.

    What is the norm for too many companies is when hiring for the same job the male has a starting salary higher than his female counterpart.  

    As time goes by,  no matter how much more capable she may become, or even that she may surpass her male counterpart in productivity, her paycheck is never made comensurate with her contribution to the company as compared to her male colleagues.

    That is not fair, nor should it be "monologued" away with utter nonsense.

    All statistics are given FOR THE SAME POSITION.  Women are earning 77% of a man's salary for the same position.  In Engineering, the disparity is actually less.  So - another lie.

      out of the equation and simply unionize everyone. The union local would then negotiate wages so that two employees with the same seniority receive the same salary, regardless of gender.

      The oft-quoted "women earn $0.77 for each dollar a man earns" is not a comparison of the same positions.  It is an overall comparison, and does not take into account differences in experience, education, occupation, position, or even hours worked per pay period.

      Conservatives want to help more people by letting the 1% and above, to be having, making, getting, creating, more slaves. OK, I got it now. That totally works for the 1% and above. For everyone else, not so much.

      Plus, it would create more incentives for the lazy underclass to take that fourth and fifth minimum wage, no benefit, part-time, shit  job. The real achievers will take on six or more jobs, or even work for free, just for the enrichment of the experience, and they will eventually become billionaires, and they lived happily ever after.

      There is nothing quite like trying to support yourself and your family by working for people who think they are doing you a favor by making sure you are underpaid. I agree the parallels on this issue with those who defended slavery as being good for slaves are overwhelming.

      For some reason, this thread brings to mind Barbara Bush talking about how those caught in the nightmare of the Superdome in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina aftermath were better off than they usually were at home.

        Years ago, a friend went to work in Qatar. He said the wealthy was using religion (Islam) to tell the poor working class (immigrants mostly working as servants)  that it was "God's will for them to be and remain poor".

        The wealthy class will do everything to encourage low wages, as it impacts them, and the GOP is more than happy to be the messenger (the henchman in reality).

    for men?  Also, am I the only one who thinks that it's just bad for men all around.  If you had two candidates for a job...everything else being equal...and one was a woman, one a man, and you could get away with paying the woman 30% less, well, what would any businessperson with half a brain do?  Duh.  Come on guys, equal pay is good for you too!

    company at the same time with the same qualifications in the early 1970s. (We weren't married until several years later.)
    I found out a few years ago that he started at $10K while I started at $8K.
    A couple of years later my boss gave me a smaller raise because "men have to pay for dates and single gals like you don't." He wasn't swayed by my telling him that I always paid my share on dates (a feminist point of honor at the time) and had to pay rent and support myself just like a man.
    He gave much the same story a while later to another single female colleague when he gave a bigger raise to male administrative assistant without a college degree; the admin had a family to support but she didn't. In fact she was supporting her mother as well herself, but that didn't matter to him.
    It's beyond frustrating that this sort of inequality still exists, and that people are still clueless enough to use virtually the same arguments in its favor.

      My future husband and I were working the same job, living together and had no kids.  Even though I had seniority, my future husband got a higher raise.  Our boss, the most liberal of liberals, said it was because future hubby had a family to support, even though we pooled our money.  When I called him on that argument as being totally bogus, my boss apologized.  But he didn't even out the raises.

The CEOs are out there selflessly creating jobs for us all, so it's about time we come to their rescue. Let's all stand with our CEO's to protect their jobs!!!! From here forth, CEOs can not be paid any more than 40 times what the lowest paid employees of the corporations earn.

          severance that is negotiated as part of the initial hiring or promotion package. Typically the severance is payable unless the executive is fired for "cause", which depending on the location of the company can vary widely.

          Compensation, including severance, is all about leverage. If someone really wants you to work for them they will agree to high levels of compensation and generous severance, if things don't work out.

              Unfortunately most employees are viewed as replaceable and the senior management isn't overly concerned if they leave or stay because new employees with similar skills are readily available.

              Mechanics, techs, cooks and clerks need to be part of unions so they have fair work rules, seniority, and due process.

    So according to conservative logic:

    Millionaires won't want to work or create jobs anymore if we tax them a couple of percent more.

    But women should be happy to earn less because it means that they are less likely to lose their jobs.
