Wisconsin Republicans do seem especially steeped in crazy these days.
The Wisconsin Republican Party
has lost its mind.
Earlier this month, the party's Resolutions Committee voted in favor of a proposal that says the state party "supports legislation that upholds Wisconsin's right, under extreme circumstances, to secede."
A version of the so-called "state sovereignty" resolution was first OK'd last month by one of the state GOP's eight regional caucuses as an assertion of the state's 10th Amendment rights. The measure also calls for ending all mandates that go "beyond the scope of the constitutionally delegated powers of the federal government."
Top Republican officials hoped to kill the fringe proposal during a meeting of the resolutions panel at the Hyatt Hotel in Milwaukee on April 5. Instead, the committee made a few edits to the resolution and adopted it on a split vote.
Patriots, through and through. So now it goes to the delegates, who will get to vote on whether or not the party wants to reopen the question that the Civil War settled a long while back, all because something—Obamacare? It's probably Obamacare, or possibly Benghazi—is the biggest crime against the states since telling them they couldn't trade humans as property.
Top Republican Officials, you see, hoped to kill the "fringe" proposal. But if it made it through the party committee, it ain't fringe, and top Republican officials need to sit down in front of a mirror with a stiff drink and contemplate just what the hell their crackpot nullification-spouting, secession-touting party has come to.
