Rep. Dennis Ross got on his high horse to scold constituents who support a higher minimum wage, a living wage. Once again a politician puts his tunnel vision ideology over the reality of pain and suffering of the working poor and the working middle class.

Congressman Dennis Ross (R-FL) is confronted by constituent Shaneeka Rainer who works a full time job at Arby’s for minimum wage. Think Progress reports it as follows.

People like Shaneeka Rainer are often told that they shouldn’t try to get the minimum wage increased because it only really applies to teenagers working entry-level jobs. That indeed may have described Rainer 10 years ago, when he first entered the workforce. But a decade after he got his first job in fast food, Rainer still finds himself working at Arby’s for minimum wage.

In other words, Rainer has worked an entire decade receiving only one raise: when Congress increased the minimum wage in 2007.

And so he showed up at his congressman’s public forum on Tuesday to ask Rep. Dennis Ross (R-FL) to finally give him and millions of other low-income Americans a raise.

When asked if he supports the minimum wage Dennis Ross said no. Most importantly watch the emotional disdain to even consider that it is the right thing to do. He continues to make the absurd and debunked argument that raising the minimum wage hurts the economy.

He asked who would pay for the minimum wage increase. A constituent yelled that he does not mine paying twenty cents more for a hamburger in order for a higher minimum wage, a living wage. Dennis Ross dismisses that constituent sarcastically encouraging him to pay more taxes with his goodwill. Most Americans want a higher minimum wage and are willing to pay for it. They know it is good for all Americans, not just a select few capital hoarders.

At the end of the video snippet Rep. Dennis Ross felt compelled to scold his constituents about American values. He made it seem like working hard for low pay is a cherished American value. Maybe Dennis Ross needs to do a stint in America's sweatshops; fast food restaurants and many minimum wage jobs. Reality will strike then.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  I saw that video (5+ / 0-)

on MSNBC. The guy needed to be slapped down. He was unbelievably rude to everyone there. If someone even suggested that he give up ONE benefit that we pay for, he would have a hissy fit. Deprive the "victims" who work for $7+ "and leave our money alone". The politicians today make me sick, sick, sick. I felt so sorry for Rainer when he gave up and sat back down. He stayed with it for a decent amount of time and then gave up.

I once worked 12 hour shifts in an emergency room for minimum. It almost killed me.

    Ross to work for you?

I think we need to ask the voters, "why have you hired these idiots to work for you?"

One never knows at the begining how someone is going to work. But, after two years, the probationary period is over and the incompetent should be sent home to do something else.

For people who really want to annoy their neighbors, they should be encouraged to get some attack dogs, not vote in Congressmen who are going to rob us blind.

  •  Yeah, but the disgusting part (1+ / 0-)

is that people will still vote for this idiot and the others like him.  And we all know who those voters are - hypocritical Tea Baggers who're collecting 'theirs' while the working poor pay 'their' SS and Medicare, but can pound sand when they themselves retire.

I'm not trying to start a generational war here, but I get so sick of seeing old, white, white haired Tea Baggers screaming about gubmint debt and deficits and saying 'entitlements' must be cut for the rest of us, all while we who are currently working pay their bills.  And the worst part?  They don't even see their own blatant hypocrisy or that of their 'candidates'.

I know, preaching to the choir today.
