On June 7th, 2006 Kos wrote a diary titled "The Libertarian Dem".
He defines Libertarian Dems as:
So in practical terms, what does a Libertarian Dem look like? A Libertarian Dem rejects government efforts to intrude in our bedrooms and churches. A Libertarian Dem rejects government "Big Brother" efforts, such as the NSA spying of tens of millions of Americans. A Libertarian Dem rejects efforts to strip away rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights -- from the First Amendment to the 10th. And yes, that includes the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms.
This is the direction of society & the party.
1) Over the past 20 years support for gun rights has increased & support for gun control has significantly decreased.
2) In Colorado, the contrasting philosophies of Libertarian Democrats & Bloomberg went head-to-head....and it wasn't even close:
Three Senators lost their jobs to recall elections (with one resigning before the recall election), in a state that had never had so much as a single successful recall petition in its entire history. Including in a district that voted for Obama by 19 points less than a year prior, despite the anti-recall side having a significant spending & turnout advantage, & most tellingly--with 33% of Democrats voting for the recall (pdf, page 7)
3) President Obama was unable to get a simple majority vote in a Democratic majority Senate for a Surgeon General nomination because up to 10 Democratic senators were unwilling to vote for Murthy because of his statements on gun control.
This issue has been a complete rout, to the point that Democratic candidates aren't even mentioning gun control on their websites.
People don't support taking liberties away from innocent people because of the actions of murderers. People do support the rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights -- from the First Amendment to the 10th.
Let's get with the times & move forward.
