A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

The orange pinpoints are the location of each organized group of Kossacks.

Have you had recent run-ins with non-subtle sexism or racism?

There's always the best and the brightest. Then there's always the sketchiest as well.

When you work in a multi-cultural environment with more matriarchs than patriarchs, the odds that a sexist and racist individual would thrive are on the low side. However we have relatively new one where I work, or at least we did until last week.

I walk in the door at work a few days ago and I the first person I see is Imahater (name changed to protect my stomach). I ask him how the day is going. As we're talking a female customer pats him on the back and says goodbye. I ask about the pat. I expect a short answer along the lines of great food or good service. Instead, I get, with his usal droll voice, a sado-sexual ideation-fueled diatribe that begins, "Oh, that's because she wants me to...."

No. Just no.

He's delivering this missive to the wrong person at the wrong place. As I'm grappling with the realization that Imahater has no class whatsoever at all & shouldn't be near the public, he suddenly deviates into a diatribe of why no one likes him at work. He concludes that by saying, "The whole Mexican brigade is against me. They yak yak yak all the time and laugh, thinking I don't know what they're doing. That's why I tip them out less. Jose (who he spies out of the corner of his eye a few feet away) is okay though, cuz' he's from El Salvador."

There's not many more nails that can fit into his coffin at this point.

Why do trash talkers never recognize this expression?
I was going at the conversation from the sexism side and didn't get the full import of that statement until I mentioned it to Jose a couple of minutes later. Jose's response was short, simple & shocking. Jose never, never, uses curse words. I've never even ever heard him really put anyone down. He'd rather just shake his head than make a negative comment about anyone. "He's a racist MF," was Jose's only comment. And with that I went upstairs to talk to the day manager about termination.

Not surprisingly, she had been diligently collecting stories from other female coworkers of conversations they had had with him. In fact, before I had gotten there she had already pulled him aside to talk to him about what had just seemed his inability to take direction from female coworkers with more seniority than he. It turns out, that after that talking to, and before I had entered work, he had decided to sample some of the new brews (another huge nail in the coffin). That's apparently what led to his bravado performance with me.

As we're discussing it upstairs the other manager (who by now is aghast at the level of his sexism & racism) says to me, "but why would he tell you all this. You're Mexican." Umm. No, I'm not. I'm the Jew in the family. My son is the Mexican. But thanks for the compliment anyways. She laughs at her own assumptions.

So life goes on...with at least one less blatant throwback in my little world.

How are the racists and sexists doing in your part of the planet? Are they keeping low profiles?

DC Kossacks Inaugural Picnic Meet-up: Splendor On The Grass

by NinthElegyfor DC Kossacks

NinthElegy held her inaugural meet-up for the new DC Kossacks on Saturday, April 19th. She packed her tony bamboo picnic hamper with a healthy salad and artisan triple-chocolate cupcakes garnished with Eastern Redbud blossoms from her neighborhood tree. Such lovely details to reward her attendees. The timing was perfect for a picnic among the cherry blossoms on the mall.

Baja Arizona Kossacks Meet-Up Liveblog

by Azazellofor Baja Arizona Kossacks

The Baja Kossacks just had their 4th Annual Picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. sneakers563. The group is shepherded by Azazello, an official member of DKos since 2009. From his diary and about his state:

More and better Democrats is always a popular subject for debate here in Baja AZ, especially in an election year. Against the charge that Arizona is an incurably red state I often point out that 5 of our 9 US Reps are Democrats. This is true but it doesn't tell the whole story. While we in Tucson are justifiably proud of Raúl Grijalva (Wikipedia HERE) whose first elected office was board member for Tucson Unified School District #1, most of Tucson and all of Cochise County are now represented by Ron Barber (Wikipedia HERE) who is a very Blue Dog indeed. For an example of this Blue Doggedness see this article at Alternet ☛ 5 Million Dirty Reasons for Record Deportations.

He's on top of it and thanks to him for gathering Kossacks together to become stronger.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
