A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Are you a Star Wars fan?
Did you know that today is Stars Wars Day? It's May 4th. As in, May the Fourth Be With You. And tomorrow is, apparently, Revenge of the Sith Fifth. According to Wikipedia (or even Wookieepedia), this venerable tradition dates back to 2011, although the original connection of the date to Star Wars was, surprisingly, the work of British Tories:
The reference was first used on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Thatcher's political party, the Conservatives, placed a congratulatory advertisement in The London Evening News that stated "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations."[3] This reading of the line has also been recorded in the UK Parliament's Hansard.[4]
I won't comment on the similarities and differences between Margaret Thatcher and Darth Vader here except to say that while both went over to the Dark Side, Vader was far more empathetic.
I'm not a huge Star Wars fan myself. I enjoyed the original trilogy very much, but I never caught the fever of the prequel trilogy. The series certainly made Harrison Ford a very rich man. Not to mention George Lucas.
But the original film was indeed a milestone in both F/X and in its epic storyline. It gave us the cinnamon bun hairdo, light sabres, the Death Star, R2D2 and C3PO, and an unforgettable bar full of aliens. Other than that, it's mostly a revamped WWII fighter pilot flick. But it had a campy quality ("Whaddya think? A princess and a guy like me?") and a dedication to the Saturday Morning action flick that lent it charm.
Star Wars also spawned a brilliant Mel Brooks satire, Spaceballs, which had some truly hilarious moments. Of course, Disney, which bought the rights to the Star Wars franchise from Lucasfilms, now features the May 4 celebration, which originated at the Toronto Underground Cinema in 2011, at its theme parks.
Star Wars Episode VII is due out next year. It features the original stars and picks up where Return of the Jedi left off. I don't know if I will make an effort to see it or not. But how about you?
Are you a Star Wars fan?

by NinthElegy ♥ for DC Kossacks
NinthElegy held her inaugural meet-up for the new DC Kossacks on Saturday, April 19th. She packed her tony bamboo picnic hamper with a healthy salad and artisan triple-chocolate cupcakes garnished with Eastern Redbud blossoms from her neighborhood tree. Such lovely details to reward her attendees. The timing was perfect for a picnic among the cherry blossoms on the mall.

EagleOfFreedom has resuscitated the Seattle Kossacks. Many groups have been started there but with the support of this series I think we've got Seattle going again. This is the second meet-up EagleOfFreedom has successfully completed. His diary was really fantastic. Their special guest was Ojibwa. If you read the diary and the comments you can see they are all ready to work together on things like GOTV!

by Azazello ♥ for Baja Arizona Kossacks
The Baja Kossacks just had their 4th Annual Picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. sneakers563. The group is shepherded by Azazello, an official member of DKos since 2009. From his diary and about his state:
More and better Democrats is always a popular subject for debate here in Baja AZ, especially in an election year. Against the charge that Arizona is an incurably red state I often point out that 5 of our 9 US Reps are Democrats. This is true but it doesn't tell the whole story. While we in Tucson are justifiably proud of Raúl Grijalva (Wikipedia HERE) whose first elected office was board member for Tucson Unified School District #1, most of Tucson and all of Cochise County are now represented by Ron Barber (Wikipedia HERE) who is a very Blue Dog indeed. For an example of this Blue Doggedness see this article at Alternet ☛ 5 Million Dirty Reasons for Record Deportations.
He's on top of it and thanks to him for gathering Kossacks together to become stronger.
Here's the group photo:
L-R: Back row: pwoodford, DaNang65, Azazello, itzadryheat, rasbobbo
Front row: ItsAMathJoke, drnatrl, sneakers563, chloris creator, Desert Rose
