A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do you like foreign films ?
We do. We rent them fairly often. The last one we saw was Chinese, A Touch of Sin. It was four vignettes based on actual incidents in China, one of them being the suicide of a worker in a Foxconn factory.
I've known people, some of them college graduates, who wouldn't watch foreign films because they had trouble keeping up with subtitles. We have no problem with that. Nowadays most DVDs give you a choice, you can watch the movie dubbed in English or in the original language with subtitles. We like the subtitles so we can hear the original language, even if we don't understand it. Subtitles or dubbed, unless you speak the language you're sort of at the mercy of the translators. Even with my limited Spanish it sometimes happens that I'll disagree with the translation of some line in a Mexican movie, but it's never anything that would change the plot. We saw a good Mexican documentary a couple of weeks back, it was called La Bestia, The Beast. That's what Central Americans emigrants call the freight train that they ride north through Mexico to the US border.
One of the best things about movies made in other countries is that they're not as predictable as American movies. They're not as formulaic. A lot of Americans films follow the 20-40-20 rule; that's 20 minutes to set up the action, 40 minutes of action, and 20 minutes to resolve the plot. I guess that would be 30-60-30 these days since most movies are 2 hours long now instead of 90 minutes. Many European films don't even have an "ending." They just sort of trail off without a plot resolution where everything comes out well for the heroes, like we knew it would in the first half-hour. Sometimes I wonder if Americans aren't comforted by predictability. We saw one like that recently, a movie with no real ending, a French film called Sister. That one was pretty good.
One of the things that makes American movies so craptastic is that they are made by corporations. Corporations want big-profit "blockbusters" and they don't like taking chances. One way to make sure your movie is a hit is to base it on one that was a hit the last time you made it, you make a sequel. They call them "franchises," these series of sequels and prequels. I see there's a new Spiderman movie out, I can't wait.
We're slavophiles, Mrs. Z and I. We read Russian novels and Russian history. We watch a lot of Russian movies. One of the most influential film makers ever was Russian, Sergei Eisenstein. I was reminded of his film Battleship Potemkin recently when annieli posted a modified image from it in one of the Ukraine diaries. It takes place in Odessa and the scene of the baby carriage bumping down the Potemkin Stairs had been copied many times. It was used in The Untouchables. ¡Que Viva Mexico! is another Eisenstein classic. It was originally supposed to be a film about the Mexican Revolution but financial and political problems kept it from being finished. A restored version of the footage he shot in Mexico is available on DVD and is worth seeing. The imagery is unforgettable. Burnt by the Sun is a good one, sort of the human side of the Stalinist repression in the late 1930s. And then there's Stalingrad. The Russians are as hung up on the Battle of Stalingrad as we are on D-Day and there have been several good movies about it. I have a copy of the two-part Soviet epic made in 1949. "The Boss" was still alive when it was made so of course Stalin is depicted as the military mastermind behind the Red Army's victory. But if you can look past the cult of personality it's a fairly accurate account of the battle with thousands of Red Army extras and period correct equipment. There's also a pretty good German Stalingrad movie showing the battle from the loser's perspective. The one I'm waiting for is the new 2013 Russian version. It's in 3-D and hugely popular in Russia. I'll rent it the minute it appears on DVD.
I know I'm spoiled when it comes to movie rentals. We have an outstanding video store here. They cater to film buffs and have a huge selection of foreign films. I've never looked into Netflix so I don't know what kind of selection they have, but I'd be bored to death if I had to rely on "Hollywood" for my movies. How 'bout it CUA film fans and critics,

by NinthElegy ♥ for DC Kossacks
NinthElegy held her inaugural meet-up for the new DC Kossacks on Saturday, April 19th. She packed her tony bamboo picnic hamper with a healthy salad and artisan triple-chocolate cupcakes garnished with Eastern Redbud blossoms from her neighborhood tree. Such lovely details to reward her attendees. The timing was perfect for a picnic among the cherry blossoms on the mall.

by Azazello ♥ for Baja Arizona Kossacks
The Baja Kossacks just had their 4th Annual Picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. sneakers563. The group is shepherded by Azazello, an official member of DKos since 2009. From his diary and about his state:
More and better Democrats is always a popular subject for debate here in Baja AZ, especially in an election year. Against the charge that Arizona is an incurably red state I often point out that 5 of our 9 US Reps are Democrats. This is true but it doesn't tell the whole story. While we in Tucson are justifiably proud of Raúl Grijalva (Wikipedia HERE) whose first elected office was board member for Tucson Unified School District #1, most of Tucson and all of Cochise County are now represented by Ron Barber (Wikipedia HERE) who is a very Blue Dog indeed. For an example of this Blue Doggedness see this article at Alternet ☛ 5 Million Dirty Reasons for Record Deportations.
He's on top of it and thanks to him for gathering Kossacks together to become stronger.
Here's the group photo:

Front row: ItsAMathJoke, drnatrl, sneakers563, chloris creator, Desert Rose
