Michael Sam was just drafted in the 7th and final round by the St. Louis Rams.

In case anyone is tempted to think that Michael Sam was drafted only "to make a statement", chew on this:

Sam was the Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year. For those who do not follow college football, the SEC is generally regarded as the toughest conference in the sport.

Maybe Sam makes it, maybe he doesn't. Personally, my bet will be on the man voted the best defensive player in the best conference in college football.

Good luck, Michael!

Edited to add:

To those who poo-poo Sam's "measurables" apropos the NFL meat market (combine), feast your eyes on Jerry Rice's measured 40 time prior to the draft:

4.71

...and this is the greatest wide receiver - a speed position if ever there was one - in the history of professional football.

Sam can play when the whistle blows...period. You don't achieve the status of SEC Defensive Player of the Year (ahead of #1 pick Clowney, BTW) without having game when the pads are on.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I' m betting he makes it too.

If he can be a playmaker, they won't care who he sleeps with

    •  Huh? (0+ / 0-)

They already don't care about who he sleeps with, they drafted him.

Chances are. He won't make the team.  He's too short, too slow and had a disastrous Pro Day according to most NFL scouts.

      •  exactly (0+ / 0-)

they drafted him to make a statement. a statement that needed making, but that's all this is.  if he was as good as the sec defensive award should mean he would have been drafted a lot sooner than 7th or so from the last.

depending on how much statement they want to make, he may make the team and play in pre season games a bit.  Unless he improves or is drastically better than his pro day scouting reports showed he wont play in a regular season game unless the rams are up so much it doesn't matter.

        •  I don't think they've made a statement (0+ / 0-)

If there were 10 players ranked higher, Sam doesn't get drafted.  If he was rated better, he would've been drafted higher.  Teams don't care about anything except putting players on the field if they think they will help them win.

Michael Sam was voted the best defensive player in the best conference in the land...ahead of dear Clowney, I might add.

He has also been described as a freakin BEAST of a pass rusher - and he has the stats to back it up. I seem to remember people like Mike Mamula and Ryan Leaf "testing well" during the combine...then playing terrible on the field.

Sam plays well on the field...and the Rams wouldn't have drafted him if they didn't believe he was capable of playing at the next level.

I just wonder....  If his on field playing was as good as it looked, why didn't he go higher?  a lot of people expected him to go in the first round.  makes me wonder if his play was as good as it looked or if his team didn't play enough good opponents.  I know the SEC is said to be the best in college football but they do have pretty safe schedules for a lot of teams each year.  if the scouts thought he was as bad as his draft place shows it makes me wonder if the rams took him to break the barrier on openly gay players.

I'm just wondering this  not trying to discredit his achievement I hope he plays well just like I hope all new draftees are successful.

  •  that's great..I think he's (0+ / 0-)

handled himself really well...wise beyond his years. Now he can just play football.

  •  good for him (0+ / 0-)

Jeff Fischer is a good coach and the Rams will treat him fairly.  I hope that he can make the team.  Was kinda hoping my Steelers would take him, but he doesn't fit our scheme.  But I wish him the best and hope that he can inspire others coming up along behind him.
