Michael Sam was just drafted in the 7th and final round by the St. Louis Rams.
In case anyone is tempted to think that Michael Sam was drafted only "to make a statement", chew on this:
Sam was the Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year. For those who do not follow college football, the SEC is generally regarded as the toughest conference in the sport.
Maybe Sam makes it, maybe he doesn't. Personally, my bet will be on the man voted the best defensive player in the best conference in college football.
Good luck, Michael!
Edited to add:
To those who poo-poo Sam's "measurables" apropos the NFL meat market (combine), feast your eyes on Jerry Rice's measured 40 time prior to the draft:
4.71
...and this is the greatest wide receiver - a speed position if ever there was one - in the history of professional football.
Sam can play when the whistle blows...period. You don't achieve the status of SEC Defensive Player of the Year (ahead of #1 pick Clowney, BTW) without having game when the pads are on.
