This is the headline on our local paper after the wheat contamination was disclosed. It was the same day we had a Monsanto Global Plant Breeder come speak at OSU. This is the sign I carried to greet him.
The electoral success of Jackson and Josephine Counties has simply electrified Oregonians. These two counties lead off on what we are confident will be a landslide of other counties following suit. My county, Benton, is just beginning our petition signature campaign. Lane county's ordinance is still stalled in court; however, with legal precedence being set, they might be ready for the November ballot also.
Jackson and Josephine are only the beginning. We have momentum now!
There are Marches against Monsanto in over a dozen communities. I am going to the one in Eugene. They always put on a great march. They have drummers and a Chinese Dragon. At least 500 people will be going to that one with a big party and picnic in a park afterwards.
Just a reminder of how Oregon has already suffered market losses due to GMO contamination.
Jackson and Josephine have enacted their ordinance. Benton and Lane are close behind. Oregon now has a network of other counties who are organizing for their own ordinances. They will be meeting in Eugene next week to share celebration and plan strategies.
Nothing like beating up on Big Biotech to make you feel empowered.
Are you marching tomorrow? If so let us know by leaving a comment. I'll put the events below the orange protest sign.
