Dr. Ben Carson takes ideological rigidity to a new level. Carson, a gifted neurosurgeon and otherwise intelligent person, has allowed his ideological indoctrination to cloud his judgment over the last several years. Sadly he does this at the expense of humaneness.

Carson showed either his lack of honesty or his lack of knowledge on Obamacare and on the real problems of the VA. Over the last two days I used a Jon Stewart piece to highlight the VA scandal and the propensity America has always had to give veterans the shaft, and a Rachel Maddow piece that showed the VA problem was created by Congress.

The Fox News reporter asked Carson if the VA scandal was a preview to what would be the outcome of Obamacare. She was obviously attempting to show a parallel where there is none. Carson took that opportunity to show his lack of humanity.

“I think what’s happening with the veterans is a gift from God,” said Carson. “To show us what happens when you take layers and layers of bureaucracy and place them between the patients and the healthcare provider. And if we can’t get it right with the relatively small number of veterans, how in the world are you going to do it with the entire population. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure this out.”

He's correct; It does not take rocket science to figure out America’s healthcare problem. The folks gouging the healthcare system aren’t the public sector. The folks ripping off the system are the profiteers in the private sector. Why would America want to extend that? The real VA problem is that they are at way above capacity even as Congress fails to fund them appropriately.

Carson and the reporters attempt to equate Obamacare to the VA scandal shows a lack of understanding of Obamacare. It does not matter how many times right-wing pundits call it a government takeover of health care. It cannot be a government healthcare takeover if private insurance companies are paying the bills to private healthcare providers. That is simply a statement of fact.

That said, as shown in most industrialized countries, it would be much more efficient to have health care for all paid through a single-payer system. Sadly, the American plutocracy continues to create false stories to distract the American populace from supporting policies in their best interest. Ultimately however, fact-based data will prevail.

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

According to Carson, God must have a warped sense of gift-giving. Does he really think that bureaucrats are THAT MUCH worse than insurance number crunchers? At least the bureaucrats don't have a vested interest in denying people coverage.

Start two wars that send back thousands that have been injured and then pay VA folks for bonuses for reduced waiting times and they figure  out a way to cheat.

Americans are not the brightest bulbs on the planet. guns wars reality TV shows and fear based pay for performance bonuses is taking Americans to third world status.

Americans actually think if they put the same two parties into office change will come. Americans the system is corrupt with money and professional politicians.

until you change the system nothing will change.

In a land of individuals like America finding an American that is capable of systemic thinking is like finding a white  crow.

  •  Carson. Gifted? Intelligent? Not so fast. (6+ / 0-)

    Calling Carson

"a gifted neurosurgeon and otherwise intelligent person"
overstates his talents.  Yes, he's a graduate of Yale and a neurosurgeon, but that does not make him a genius, political or otherwise. I graduated from Harvard many years ago and I can assure you that not all Ivy League alums are brilliant intellectuals or original thinkers. Nor does mastering the fine tuned mechanical  skills required for neurosurgery mean one is a political polymath. Carson is a supremely self confident man who's infatuated with himself. So was Richard Nixon.

With two of the longest wars in U.S. history, and with the injuries being uniquely displayed with loss of limbs and other body parts that we've not seen in other wars due to the method of attack from the other side, the cost to keep our military covered with acceptable treatment in the hospitals and rehab was so under-estimated by -- guess who? Repubs and the Congress they manipulate. Republicans just love the fireworks, but oh, the clean-up is a bit bothersome. They can take full credit for cutting the funding for VA care. They love to send them off to war and then bitch when an extreme overload of patients and under-funding result in poor care. Imagine that.

I spent three months of my life in an Army hospital and then two more months in VA rehab.  What the VA provided for me allowed me to put my life (and my body, mostly) back together.  That these obscenely rich douchebags would dick over those of us who willingly put ourselves in harm's way for the sake of their even more obscenely rich douchebag puppet masters just makes me want to vomit. It is made even worse that those same douchebags put us in harm's way - for no effing reason.  (Sorry, this makes me very upset.). Despite the chicanery that got us hurt, we upheld our end of the bargain.  How withered of a soul does one have to have to willingly - willingly - not upheld their end?  And to use us as pawns in their sick twisted games?

There's a shortage, a major shortage, of doctors and other types of providers, such as Physicians Assistants and Nurse practitioners, EVERYWHERE.   And it will get worse, since there are many doctors who will be retiring in the next ten years.  My husband is a physician, and he, along with many colleagues, are working way past their 65th birthday.

He was a VA physician for 9 years, until the VA awarded the clinic contract to another company, who underbid by $800,000.  How can you set up a new facility, furnish it, staff it, and save $800,000?  Well, you treat the staff so poorly that many move on (quit.)  and you tell the doctors that they have to see more patients/hour.

My husband see his old patients now and then and the ones who talk about the changes are disgusted.  Is this the VA's fault?  Well, yes, in that they let the bid to the lowest bidder, not to the company which had the best reputation.  But the company is a private company which is making lots of money from this contract.

I have a friend who is a psychiatrist, and was the head of a program training psychiatrist residents, seeing Vets, with the goal of preventing suicide.  She quit when they powers that be said that the newby docs had to push the patients through quickly and try to not have return visits.

  •  Right Wing Idiot (0+ / 0-)

I'd rather have a few "layers of bureaucracy" between me and my health care provider than no health insurance at all. And "no health care at all" was exactly the situation for many people before the Affordable Care Act. Canadians and British people don't seem to mind some bureaucracy in their nationalized health care systems. Maybe it's because they have a much loved "cradle to grave" health insurance guarantee which they can NEVER lose, for any reason whatsoever. Does Ben Carson truly believe we would be better off with the pre-Obamacare system ? Well, incredibly and sadly, he really believes that.

Now ... I must assume that he is a well educated man. I mean, you know ....... being a doctor and all. But his comments prove that even well educated people can be stupid idiots.
