My grandmother never cease's to amaze me. She is turning 100 and is such a lovely person, still changing and still growing!
The last I saw her, she told me she hoped she would get a certificate from the President. This shocked me because I know she did not vote for him. And, I remember a time in her earlier life when I doubt she would have wanted a certificate from a black man (or half black man). But, perhaps my memory is faulty or perhaps her opinions have changed. Whatever the reason, I was kind of stunned by the request.
But she has surprised me before. A life long Republican, I was shocked when I asked her who the best President in her lifetime was and she replied without the slightest hesitation, "FDR, because he gave daddy a job working on the roads and without it, I don't know how we would have eaten"!
But that's not the only time she has surprised me. I was stunned when she played the guitar one day, singing old Hank Snow songs for me (one of my very few country recording hero's. . .must be genetic!). Or when just recently she recited some very long and thought provoking poems. Her mind is still very sharp even though her body is beat and broken. She does still get around on her own two feet though very slowly and carefully and with the aid of her walker.
So, I have tried to get through to the white house but cannot. I do not want her birthday to come around and for her not to get her certificate. I am hoping some reader here may be able to assist me. Hopefully, I can get it in time to frame it (boy, that will really piss of my cranky right wing family! But I no longer speak to them anyways).
Please, someone help Grammy !
