Received this e-mail today from Senator Cory Booker (D. NJ) on behalf of himself and Senator Jack Reed (D. RI):
During his second inaugural address, Abraham Lincoln re-affirmed our country’s sacred promise to care for those who sacrificed for our country in war: “to care for him who shall have borne the battle…”
President Lincoln realized that the cost of war doesn’t end when the last soldier comes off the battlefield, but that we owe a debt to our veterans which continues long after their service is complete.
Unfortunately, if you’ve seen the news lately you know we’ve fallen short on that promise.
But this week, the Senate will vote on bipartisan legislation to improve care at VA facilities across the country. The legislation allows for the hiring of more doctors and nurses to keep up with the increased number of veterans returning home from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and its passage should be a no-brainer.
A similar bill was blocked three months ago, but if we speak with a loud enough voice, this time we can inspire the bipartisan cooperation our veterans deserve.
Please join me, Army Veteran and U.S. Senator Jack Reed, VoteVets, and others by signing our joint petition urging Congress to pass the Sanders-McCain bill to improve veterans’ health care.

George Washington predicted that the willingness of future generations to enlist in the military will depend greatly on how they perceive our nation cared for the veterans of previous generations.
This bill goes a long way towards improving health care for our nation’s veterans. It’s not only the right thing to do, but an investment in our national security.
