Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, has reportedly announced the 'restoration of the Caliphate', with himself as Caliph.
This is bad news for the King of Saudi Arabia because one of the main functions of the Caliph is being the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the protector of the two holiest mosques in Islam, Al-Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Al-Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.
And the King of Saudi Arabia claims the title of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, even though he does not claim the title of Caliph, which was abolished by Atatürk in 1924.
It wil be interesting to see if al-Baghdadi challenges the Saudi King for the title and for control of the Mecca and Medina regions.
ISIS has also decided to change their name, again, this time to the Islamic State (IS) and has demanded that all jihadist organisations pledge their fealty to al-Baghdadi.
