Quite frankly anyone thinking that the recent SCOTUS decisions in favor of hobby lobby and McCullen were not important are quite simply not following the plot.
All methods of contraception are covered, the whole aim of our religious wingnuts has not been only to turn over Roe v Wade but to throw women back into the 1950's. Make contraception as hard to get as possible and terrorize women seeking an abortion, couple this with trying to close every clinic in the land and you start to get the picture.
Someone asked me why if women are in the majority are they not doing anything about it, even hinting that it is the fault of women for allowing themselves to be subjected to this garbage.
Women's victories on the road to equality have been fairly recent, after millennia of misogynist ranting from the "original sin" onwards, it's hard at times to combat religious propaganda, especially if the one you are trying to convince believes deeply and sincerely.
The idea that women are somehow second class in the eyes of god is nothing new, the obedient but equal meme is utter bullshit, even the women around Jesus were reduced to mere footnotes, the disciples after all were all men. For centuries women were treated as chattel and held to be ritually unclean. It is never more clear when sex is discussed and women are branded as "sluts" for even considering it in the first place.
Female genital mutilation is both a deeply held and cultural belief in many communities both Christian and Muslim, does that mean we have to accept this barbaric practice? Male genital mutilation is upheld by others, although the degree of abuse, mutilation and damage is not equivalent to FGM
That people of color are sub-human is another deeply held belief that was recognized before the civil rights act [and after] by segregation. Is this belief acceptable just because it was deeply held? Christianity once upheld that slavery was a divine decree.
The rights reaction to this "narrow decision" effecting only companies that have a limited number of owners [about 90% of all companies by the way] will open the floodgates. Why are major corporations being discriminated against? The move against the LGBT community has already started.
This is all about, money, power and authoritarianism coupled with misogyny, racism and homophobia. The patriarchal religions have always been about power, only recently has this power been challenged and somewhat reduced.
When bigotry can be masked by a deeply held "religious" belief then Pandora's Box has been well and truly opened.
If you don't think these decisions matter, please think again.
