Sarah Palin, who does not seem to want anyone to finish their term in office, has joined the group calling for the impeachment of Obama.
This article gives several reasons why this is so bad for the GOP.
According to the Washington Post piece, by having Palin join the cause, the cause becomes more célèbre, because she is a celebrity. And that means that more of the GOP will have to commit to answering the question about whether or not they support impeachment. And this is a question that they would rather be suitably vague about.
She's the first Republican of any significant national stature to make this call. And she's the kind of figure who could potentially recruit others to the cause — people who will want to be heard. Palin surely doesn't carry the kind of weight she once did in the GOP, but she still has a significant tea party following and is highly popular among the conservative base.
If a significant pro-impeachment portion of the conservative base does materialize — and that's a big "if" — it will put Republican lawmakers in the unenviable position of responding to questions about whether they, too, agree with the idea of impeachment.
We all here know how inappropriate impeachment is. I won't guarantee that Obama has done nothing that could justify impeachment - I think it would be very hard to walk through the maze of the presidency without touching a few tripwires - but I've got to say that he seems to have transgressed far less than others who have occupied the oval office.
The Congress already has the lowest approval rating in history. This would not help them. They have already tried to shut down the government more than once.
This would not exactly give them power. Obama is already well into his second term. Do you think Biden will let them have their way afterwards?
It would look bad - even Rush Limbaugh recognizes this! - in terms of history. Imagine belonging to a group who voted to impeach the first black president, on charges you know are ridiculous?
Hey, John McCain! When are you going to repudiate your VP pick?
