District 1199C has just finished negotiating very tough contract re-openers in 38 of Philadelphia’s biggest and most important healthcare institutions. It was a fight
President Henry Nicholas and the leadership of the union prepared for six months. We rallied at hospitals, had an elders convention, march, and rally at City Hall. President Nicholas announced that some version of Armageddon would erupt in the city of Philadelphia if the contracts weren’t settled.
DESPITE THE ONGOING ASSAULT ON LABOR, workers and their unions are fighting hard to save the middle class, rebuild the labor movement, and save democracy in America.
In the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer hundreds of young people and movement warriors and leaders march on the Canton, Mississippi Nissan auto plant to demand the right of the Nissan workers to have a free choice whether to form a union.
And the GREAT labor historian and thinker Jeremy Brecher has just announced that most of New York City’s largest union have now signed up to march in the historic People’s Climate March in New York on Sunday, September 21st, 2014 to create a huge call from unions and organized labor for a major reduction in carbon emissions for our Mother Earth and for our kids and grandkids. We will demand US leadership in a United Nations agreement on climate change. And we will call for a cessation in hydraulic fracking, which is blowing up our planet.
There is no labor without life.
There is no life without a healthy Mother Earth.
