Since being sworn into office as a U.S. Senator only last year, Elizabeth Warren has relentlessly taken on some of the most powerfully corrupt individuals and entities in America today. It's been glorious to watch, and I imagine she is not only loved by the majority of this country, but admired by her peers/colleagues in Congress as well. Okay, most of them.
In the video below from July 15th, Warren delivers a floor speech that slams the Supreme Court/Hobby Lobby decision as well as the Republican corporate-bending behind it. A bill was introduced by Democratic Senators Patty Murray and Mark Udall called Protect Women’s Health from Corporate Interference Act. The bill would have overturned the SCOTUS decision, which discriminates against female employees based upon their employer's religious beliefs.
As we so often see and love, Senator Warren had some sharp and unguarded remarks in her speech. Below are several text excerpts:
"Right now, with millions of Americans still out of work, and struggling to recover from the worst economic downturn since the great depression, with 40 million Americans dealing with student loans, with millions of people working full-time at minimum wage and still living in poverty, with the big banks getting bigger and the workers getting poorer, and seniors struggling to make ends meet, Republicans in Washington have decided the most important thing for them to focus on is how to deny women access to birth control."
“Most Americans thought this was settled long, long ago. But for some reason, Republicans keep dragging us back here over, and over, and over again."
“Giant corporations and their right-wing allies fight every day in Congress to protect their own privileges and to bend the laws to benefit themselves.”
Warren concluded:
“I will never stop fighting the efforts of backward looking ideologues, who want to cut women’s access to birth control. We’ve lived in that world, and we are not going back — not ever.”
Here is the this video excerpt of speech from the Elizabeth Warren camp.
The bill, of course, was shot down by Republicans.
God knows, I love this woman. I don't imagine she will ever back down on this, or on any of the other causes she takes on for the people. From the first few speeches I witnessed, I have wanted to see Elizabeth Warren become our next president. That 'want' has only grown - and in a big way.
