To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
Now is the time for every Progressive and every Democrat to work to get out the vote.
There are only three and a half months left.
You can start by reading this article from yesterday's Washington Post:
How to Mobilize Reluctant Voters
Which is based on the book Mobilizing Inclusion by Lisa García Bedolla and Melissa R. Michelson
In a nut shell what really mobilizes these voters is repeated person to person contact.
Our analysis shows that citizens who haven’t voted much in the past can be inspired by either door-to-door visits or live phone calls. Tellingly, our research shows that such contacts, especially if repeated, can produce habitual voters. Phone banks from which callers contact the same potential voters twice are especially effective in creating committed voters. Door-to-door campaigns also showed strong results, with one such effort increasing voter turnout by more than 40 percentage points. (To be sure, most get-out-the-vote campaigns produce smaller gains.)
It often doesn't matter what you say, it is the person to person interaction where you ask the potential voter to please vote.
One contact is great, two is better.
If you knock on their door it sends the message that they can to do something so important that you bothered to walk to their doorstep to ask them to do it.
If you get one person in a household to vote there is a 60% chance for each other person in the household to vote.
If you are phone banking there is a lot to celebrate.
When you get a disconnected number that is one number that no one else has to waste time calling closer to the election. You have improved our valuable database.
If you get a jerk or a Republican (same thing?) then we know not to call this number again and you have saved someone less brave than you from having to make that call.
If you get a supporter, you have made them more likely to vote.
If you get someone who doesn't know how they plan to vote, just by calling you are persuading them to the good side. We are all lemmings at heart and we all want to be on the winning side.
If you walk canvass you get a lot of the best exercise (walking).
Now for a story. While walk canvassing I got a guy who was one of those "I'm never going to vote, they are all corrupt, they are all the same" people. The conversation got weirder as time went on and when he started going into "Fluoride Conspiracies" I tried to end the conversation as quickly as I could.
On election day guess who shows up at the polling place all excited to vote for the good guys?
I am not any way effective in persuading other people to do something, but just a person to person contact, just asking someone to go vote, got one more vote for the good guys.
