Just a quick reminder, for all of us who were lucky enough to watch the spectacle unfold on live TV - today is the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing.
I actually DID see it happen live, on our 13" B/W TV set on a very hot July day in Sun Valley, CA - I had spent my whole short life at the time being a huge fan of the space program; buying every magazine I could that featured the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, building models of rockets, watching all the news coverage that was broadcast of every launch, mission and recovery - plus all the speculative fiction that I could find, both written, films, and television. Personally I'm still sad to see that we retreated so firmly into a rock-hard shell of meanness and pettiness, and a societal hatred of science instead of continuing trying to expand our minds and capabilities. Maybe in another 45 years the pendulum will swing back, and we'll be able to continue what was started long ago.
Just a short diary, as a reminder of what was, and what could have been.
