A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Let's start the working week with a Moral Monday!
What are your earliest moviegoing memories?
When I was a young child I lived in a wonderful multi-generational home in Washington, D.C. with my mom's parents, my mom, her sister and husband and their children. I had a cousin only four years older, and she was saddled with having to watch over me and have me tag along with her. One of the things we enjoyed doing together, though, was going to the neighborhood movie theater.
For the price of a mere dollar, the five adults in the house could get rid of the two youngest children for an entire Saturday afternoon, and thereby gain some peace from our running around, giggling, bickering, and other annoying childhood behaviors.
Back in the early 60s no one thought anything of a 4 year old and an 8 year old walking five blocks to go the the movies by ourselves. That dollar would pay for both of us to get in (25 cents children's admission), eat popcorn (10 cents) and candy (5 cents for everything except Jordan Almonds which were 10 cents) while there, and if we had self-control to not spend the whole quarter during the double feature, we could get an ice cream cone for the walk home from the High's Dairy Store next door (five cents per scoop).
I have memories of seeing "Flower Drum Song", "Hatari", "Geronimo", and "Zulu" as well as other very culturally insensitive movies. We didn't have any frame of reference to know any better at that age. We saw everything from grade Z flicks such as "Hercules and the Captive Woman" to classics like "The Pink Panther". We saw the biopic PT 109 the summer before JFK was assassinated. I'm sure the adults usually checked first to make sure it was child-friendly fare instead of something rated "M" (for Mature Audiences). But they did slip up and let us go see Breakfast at Tiffany's. When I saw it again in my late 20s I was stunned to realize how completely the whole thing had gone over my head when I was a child.
My cousin and I didn't care what was playing. We went without even knowing what movie was on. It was an outing—a chance to see big screen color cartoons, and eat all kinds of junk food. There is nothing like the moment when the house lights go down and you can smell the butter and salt on the popcorn, and hear the muffled crunching noises of people munching it all around you, and settle deep into the plush velvet seat as the Merrie Melodies music starts.
The Kennedy was a second run neighborhood theatre, getting feature films many weeks or months after the big theatres downtown. When we went to Disney blockbusters, my mom would take us to a bigger theatre way across town. She took us to see 101 Dalmatians at the Uptown Theatre way over on Connecticut Avenue, but she found the movie so sappy that she spent most of the time in the lobby smoking while we sat inside enraptured. I think she took us to Mary Poppins at the Uptown too.
But going with mom meant getting dressed up and not being able to eat as much junk and having adult supervision. There was a different freedom and almost a sense of adventure in going to the movies by ourselves.
Remembering the walk to the Kennedy Theatre with my cousin on a late Saturday morning, carefree and filled with anticipation, is one of my most precious childhood memories.
And walking home in the late afternoon with an ice cream cone melting over my hand as I hummed or sang along with whatever songs I could remember... that is a sweet, sweet memory as well.
Did you go to the movies by yourself as a child, or with adults? Do you remember movies you saw at that age, and what the moviegoing experience was like? Did you live in a place where there were no movie theatres, so going to the movies was a rare treat? Or did you spend almost every weekend at the neighborhood theatre as my cousin and I did?

by tmservo433 ♥ for Kansas & Missouri Kossacks
So our latest hero, tmservo433 provides a great re-cap to the event we promoted here for him.
At the time Paul Davis spoke, I had an in room headcount of 166, which is a heck of a turnout. Sam Brownback couldn't bring in 200 in the Kansas City Metro when Rick Santorum came to town.
Kossacks showed up. Several Kossacks were in the hall, as well as individuals who noticed I still had on my Netroots gear, and were happy to come and tell us how they are working for change in our communities.
tmservo433 is doing great work seeking out Kossacks and moving his state's progressive agenda forward.
Please visit tmservo433's diary for more photos! Enjoy! You can still REC it. You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.
