At 00:29 EDT SPIEGEL ONLINE published Krieg in Gaza: Uno-Sicherheitsrat fordert einstimmig sofortige Waffenruhe (War in Gaza: UN Security Council unanimously demands ceasefire). According to the article, the Security Council has called for an ‘immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire’, and all 15 members voted for the resolution. Israelis and Palestinians are to cease fire during the Islamic festival Id al-Fitr ‘and after that’.
This is to give people in the Gaza Strip an opportunity to obtain urgently needed food and aid. At the same time the parties to the conflict are called upon to seek a sustainable truce respected by all sides.
The Council is ‘deeply concerned’ by the intensification of fighting and the death of civilians. It simultaneously supports the peace-making efforts of Egypt, UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon, and the USA.
What’s significant here is of course the unanimity.
