Two apparent misogynists are in power in Turkey.
The Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister, both of the AKP certainly seem to fill the bill with their recent comments regarding how they view women and their role in society.
Firstly we had Bulent Arinc, one of the co-founders of the AKP, currently the Deputy Prime Minister stating last week that
"A man should be moral but women should be moral as well, they should know what is decent and what is not decent," Arinc said in a speech on Monday, in the western Bursa region for the Bayram holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.
"She should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times," he added.
Not to be outdone in his disdain for women we have Prime Minister Erdogan open his mouth for all to see his
bigotry
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan faced a new outcry on Friday over his attitude to the media and women after he branded a prominent female journalist a "shameless woman" and told her "to know your place".
...
Zaman responded to Erdogan through her column in the Taraf newspaper, writing: "You are lynching a Muslim woman who described what you are doing. Because women are sitting targets, aren't they?"
She said she had been the target of a smear campaign by pro-government media outlets, who had called her a "Jewish bitch" who should become a "concubine" of Islamist jihadists in Iraq.
The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) expressed concern over the targeting of the journalist, saying "the widespread smear campaign against Amberin Zaman threatens her safety".
Under Erdogan's tenure more journalists have been jailed in Turkey than any other country.
And in two days time a man whom holds women in such low esteem is likely to be elected President.
Let us hope these remarks prove to be his undoing.
