The child kidnapping irhabi maniacs of Boko Haram are still committing mass slaughter in Nigeria, and are gaining ground in the strategic hilltop region of Gwoza, according to sources.
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Fighters from Nigeria's Boko Haram militant group seized the northeastern town of Gwoza, overwhelming soldiers based in the area before attacking civilians, security officials and a witness said on Thursday.
Northeastern Nigeria is unfortunately no stranger to terrorist violence.
“Dozens of our people have been killed by the attackers, some were slaughtered and many others shot with guns,” said resident James Mshelia to AFP.
Boko Haram is blamed for the killing of more than 10,000 people since the start of its militant Islamist offensive in 2009 across northeastern Nigeria.
Gwoza has experienced Boko Haram’s savage attacks before. The town’s emir was killed by the extremists in May. On Wednesday, his son and successor, Mohammad Idrissa Timta, was said to be missing.
Neighboring Cameroon
looks to be next.
The Nigerian Islamist movement Boko Haram has recruited and trained hundreds of young Cameroonians to carry out attacks in their own country, according to the police and civilians.
As the militant group seeks to gain a foothold in the poor, rural north of Cameroon, experts warn that violence may spread beyond border areas to other parts of the central African country.
"Boko Haram has recruited many young people" from Cameroon's Far North region, a police officer from the area told AFP on condition of anonymity.
The hardline movement, whose loosely translated name means "Western education is forbidden", has for years sown terror throughout Nigeria's northeast, then trained youths "to attack Cameroon", the officer said.

This is a challenge for Western civilization to meet.
We need to stand up to, and against, vicious gangs like this, and let them know that terror is a losing proposition.
The people of Nigeria and Cameroon and everywhere else that Boko Haram practices its terror need to know that we stand with them.
Now that we've finally paid some long-overdue attention to the Yazidis, hopefully we can focus on freeing others from the maniacal terror which threatens them.
It's the truly liberal thing to do, after all.
