Although I had certain... issues with the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center, which was the main hotel for NN14, I did have a splendid view from my 60th-floor room. Above, you can see Detroit on the left and Windsor, Ontario across the Detroit River on the right. Counter-intuitively for those of us from elsewhere, this means we are looking roughly east, because in Detroit, Canada is to the south. (You can click on the map below for an expanded, drill-downable view.) That's Lake St. Clair that the river is running out of: not a Great Lake, but a Very Good Lake.
The island in the middle of the river is Belle Isle Park, a park that is owned by the city but, as of this year, leased to the state for 30 years to be managed as a state park, not without controversy (like everything to do with Rick Snyder's Michigan). When my dad was a kid, they used to go to the zoo there; that zoo closed in 2002, and has been replaced with a "nature zoo"; there are also an aquarium and a botanical conservatory. There's also a beach and an extremely fabulous fountain. I don't usually prod people to look at Wikipedia, but the history of the park is very interesting and littered with famous names.
Anyway, I love a high perch and was unable to resist taking pictures from my window. You can see them below the orange "sun on the water" sparkle.
Sunrise: how you know you're looking east.

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
