Good Morning Kossacks and Welcome to Morning Open Thread (MOT)
We're known as the MOTley Crew and you can find us here every morning at 7:00 am Eastern (and sometimes earlier!). Feel free to volunteer to take a day - permanently or just once in awhile. With the Auto Publish feature you can set it and forget it. Sometimes the diarist du jour shows up much later: that's the beauty of Open Thread...it carries on without you! Good Morning Motlies.
Mrs F recently decided to move our two horses to a new stable which is located some 10 km (6 miles) away in the town of Velbert. In order to get there we have to drive through the very pretty town of Velbert Langenberg, which has remained pretty much unchanged for a couple of hundred years.
It is interesting that Langenberg sits on the first ever commercial railway line in Germany ( the subject of an earlier MOT diary), and was an industrial town nestling in the Deil valley. What the RAF and USAAF failed to achieve in WW2, has now been accomplished by globalisation, as the factories that lined the sides of the river have now all disappeared.
Below are a pair of videos, one (17 minutes) is a compilation of photos old and new that show how little the core town has changed over the last century or so. To me the most interesting thing was that some of the most remarkable developments of the 20th century - a tramway through the main street, and later the covering of the cobbles with tarmac have been reversed, and the street now looks more like 1850 than 1950. If you only have a couple of minutes skip to minute 3.00 for the part on the old town ( and some Monday morning sax)
The second is a go pro (7 mins) filmed on a bikers helmet cam as he drives around modern day Langenberg.
So what's on your mind today?
