Think red state Democrats are running scared away from Obamacare? That's Natalie Tennant, Democratic Senate candidate running to fill the seat Sen. Jay Rockefeller is leaving, talking about the birth of her daughter and the health problems they immediately faced—not just the health problems, but the insurance problems.
When she was a week old, our daughter Delaney had open heart surgery that saved her life. While friends, family, and folks all across West Virginia prayed with us, the insurance company called her a "pre-existing condition."
I know healthcare reform wasn't done right, there's a lot I'll do to make it better for West Virginia, but I will never go back to the days of letting insurance companies deny coverage to our children."
It's as effective a message as Sen. Mark Pryor's
"Cancer" ad, because it's telling a relatable story about how insurance companies held life and death power over us. That's an experience millions of people have experienced and everyone else lived in fear of.
That's just one of the reasons Democrats almost everywhere (ahem, Alison Lundergan Grimes) are now running on the very real, good stuff this law does. It's working and it's helping millions of people. Even most Republicans have stopped using it as the focus of their campaigns, because they know all they've got is repeal and that just won't fly anymore.
