There are a lot of interesting tidbits in this poll. One big effect of Obama's decision to combat ISIS with airstrikes, together with other nations, but simultaneously refrain from introducing ground troops seems to be that his job approval rating has jumped by 6 points. The approval rating for his handling of foreign policy has even made a significant jump from a dismal 33% to a more solid 46%, which now mirrors his overall approval rating.
Another interesting factoid is that Americans feel safer from terrorism now, during the Obama Administration, than they did prior to 9/11, when Bush/Cheney was in charge and a 2/3's majority thinks that we are safer now than we were on 9/11, under Bush.
67% say they are confident the government will be able to protect their local area from a terror attack. 58% of Americans held this view in 2002.
64% of Americans think the U.S. is safer now than it was on September 11, 2001.
That so many Americans support airstrikes against ISIS, be they Democrats, Independents, or Republicans, should be a warning to those Democratic candidates who think that a stance of dogmatic isolationism will be a good election strategy. The vast majority of Americans obviously don't see this as something akin to Bush/Cheney's disastrous Iraq quagmire and even a strong majority of self-declared liberals are for airstrikes against ISIS in Syria.
Going fully hawkish and demanding ground troops for Syria could produce even worse results, however, as Americans are evenly split on whether that would be a good idea if airstrikes don't work and only 37% of Democrats and 46% of Independents would support that option, while 67% of Republicans support it.
For those who still don't understand why a vast majority of Americans support airstrikes in Syria, I encourage you to watch the following 60 Minutes Australia Reportage on the battle of Syrian Kurdish women against ISIS:
