I am so sick of listening to the lie that American corporations pay too much in taxes to make them competitive. Joshua Smith of the Economic Policy Institute just wrote a great
piece about the effective corporate tax rate as opposed to the tax rate on the books. After all the deductions, loopholes, state taxes, corporations pay an effective tax rate of only about 13 percent–roughly equal to the effective tax rate in most of the developed world.
This data comes directly from the Government Accountability Office.
That’s a far cry from the 20-30 percent most of us who work for a living pay depending on how many kids we have.
These corporations are using the wealth we create to run the world, and then crying like a two-year-old having a temper tantrum to get their way.
It’s not only annoying, it’s unseemly. It’s not only crazy-making, it’s dangerous.
America has become the land of corporate freedom and bound workers. No freedom at work.
Corporate America created a whole industry to bust unions.
We have no freedom from debt. For many it piles higher and higher.
We have no freedom for a sustainable environment. Corporations are destroying our water and air as quickly as they can.
We’ve got no freedom to vote. 22 states have made voting harder after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act.
And women have no freedom over their own bodies, as more abortion providers are forced out of business by punitive state action.
Ultimately, we have no freedom to rebuild the Middle Class. Consequently we have no freedom to build a life of comfort and dignity for our families, children, and grandchildren.
