A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

What was the best substitution you ever did or had?
You weren't in love. You were just uncomfortable.
Substitute: a person or thing that takes the place of someone or something else
Whether we substitute one fear for another, substitute caffeine abuse for alcohol abuse, work as a substitute teacher or get a crush on one, we've all had substitution play a role in our lives. Heh. I once substituted Dailykos for the now-defunct MYDD (If you don't know, ugh, don't ask).
What was the best time you ever had being a substitute?
Was it being able to play the lead in an elementary school play after being an understudy? Was it filling-in for a sick hall monitor at middle school? Was it a high school "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with" type of thing? Was it during college when you substituted one class for another...or one substance for another? Was it as a temp worker?
Definitely not the best substitute.
Some substitutes are just bad.
For years I used Sweet'N Low in my coffee instead of sugar. That was a very bad substitute. Never satisfied the sweet tooth. Perhaps worse, during the same time I used non-fat milk instead of cream for my coffee. I thought that would keep my weight down. Yup, all part of the foibles of a mis-spent youth.
Substitute diarist
I've been a substitute many times in many places. Some so strange even I don't quite believe it. I think though that the favorite substitute work I've ever done is the work I am doing right now at this moment. I am substituting today for navajo. Today is her diary gig. I'm just the substitute Phil-in (named for a legendary New Dayer who was our go-to substitute diarist), and I love it.
Why do I love substituting for navajo?
Since she's the best of the best I know I can't match her. No way. That takes a lot of pressure off me. It is impossible to fill her shoes...so why try? I have the freedom to be as lousy a diarist as I want to be today. I think I've proven that. Aaah, the freedom to be a mediocre substitute. Haven't you ever been one?
What substitute work have you loved or hated? If you don't like this topic, which topic would you substitute for it?

by tmservo433 ♥ for Kansas & Missouri Kossacks
tmservo433 organized a registering-to-vote event for Ford County, Kansas in Dodge City to reach out to Latino voters there. He partnered with League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Ford County Democratic Party. 150 people attended to listen to John Thomas (KS House District 119 Candidate), Jean Schodorf (Secretary of State Candidate), Jim Sherow (US House, KS District 1 Candidate), Mark Low (Kansas House Candidate, District 115).
"LULAC volunteers sat at their table and handled registration after registration as people came to the event to listen to how they could change their state. We knew that not only were we helping to register new and first time voters, we were helping to bring a message into a community that has been ignored - and to help them take that message back to their friends and families."
This is a great example of reaching out to disenfranchised communities and helping them vote. Because If Democratic base voters turn out, we win. Can't be said enough. More regions need to do this.
Please visit tmservo433's diary for many MORE photos! Enjoy! You can still REC it. You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.
