Welcome to Sunday All Day Brunch. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. I find the older I get the less I need to sleep and the longer it takes me to go to sleep. Ever since I was a child I would always read before I went to sleep. I still do to this day.
Usually I have more than one book going at the same time. I am fond of mysteries and read them a lot before going to sleep. I also love Fantasy and Science Fiction. I will read these for a couple of hours but I find if the story is too absorbing I can't get to sleep easily. I remedy that by reading cookbooks or cooking magazines.
I love cooking magazines and get Cooks Illustrated, Cooks Country, and Cuisine at Home. As much as I enjoy reading other peoples recipes I have to admit that more and more I find myself going "you've got to be kidding me." One of the things about writing my own cookbook and being responsible for the diet of a brittle diabetic is that I am extremely conscious of sodium, calories, and cholesterol. Cooks rarely puts the nutrition information in their magazines. I can tell by looking the facts would show pour nutrition values. Cuisine does put it in and I look aghast at sodium intakes close to 2,000mg for a single dish. I also find lately that looking at Cook's versions of recipes that I have done that I can not believe they get paid to do some of these. There is so little flavor compounds in some of these dishes that I would think they would be embarrassed to claim they are the best versions of dishes.
Sometimes when I am tired of cooking and not ready for excitement I'll read something I have read before. Currently I am going back through my Sherlock Homes that I have read over and over again. I find it relaxing and appreciate the fact most of them are short stories.
That is my night time reading. How about you? Do you read before you go to sleep and if so have any good books to recommend?
