Mike Hubbard, Republican, member of the Alabama House of Representatives representing the 79th district in Lee County, currently serving as the Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives.
The charges against Hubbard include 23 class B felonies. Those charges include:
Four counts of using of his office as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party for personal gain;
One count of voting for legislation with a conflict of interest;
Eleven counts of soliciting or receiving a thing of value from a lobbyist or principal;
Two counts of using his office as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives for personal gain;
Four Counts of lobbying an executive department or agency for a fee;
One count of using state equipment, materials, etc. for private gain.
Hubbard, a slick Alabama politician, denies the allegations and fires back that the investigations are "politically motivated". Unfortunately, the counts against him in the indictment do not remove him from office or his position as speaker.
Hubbard was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation concerning potential public corruption in Alabama. He was indicted by a Lee County Special Grand Jury. ... If convicted, Speaker Hubbard faces two to 20 years in prison and up to $30,000 in fines for each count.
Hubbard and his lawyer visited the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Opelika on Friday to prepare for a possible arrest. Defense attorney Mark White said Monday they went to provide paperwork so Hubbard could be released on bond as quickly as possible.
Earlier this year, the investigation resulted in charges against two other state Republican lawmaker, Rep. Greg Wren, Montgomery, pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of using his office for personal gain and resigning his House seat; Rep. Barry Moore, Enterprise, charged with perjury and giving false statements, being of sterner stuff, Moore is pleading not guilty.
