This is my first attempt at a diary here on Daily Kos!
I have been canvassing for the Hagan campaign for a few weeks now. I live in Durham County which is the bluest county in the state. In my canvassing, I have found tremendous support for Senator Hagan. I have heard many say they are voting for Hagan because of women's rights, marriage equality and many other reasons. People here are also tired of the television commercials. I know I personally don't even turn my television on anymore because I am tired of them.
Last night, I encountered a Thom Tillis supporter. He is registered as a Democrat, so he was on my list to canvass. The gentleman told me he always votes for Republicans, and this year he was proud to support Tillis because Kay Hagan was a "rubber stamp" for President Obama. I politely thanked him for his time and was turning to leave when he went off on a rant about everything from ebola to gay marriage. A woman, I am assuming his wife, came to the door and told him to shut up. She told me she was a Kay Hagan supporter and that she was going to early vote on Saturday.
In my canvassing, I can tell you one recurring theme is that people are fed up with Republicans in North Carolina. Thom Tillis has energized our base by fighting marriage equality after the courts declared Amendment 1 in NC as unconstitutional. Many of the people I have talked to have mentioned this. I am hoping that North Carolina votes for Kay Hagan, and I hope we pick up a few seats in the NC House and NC Senate. I know we have been horribly gerrymandered, so I know we won't win control or anything this year.
I am highly impressed with the GOTV efforts of the Hagan campaign, and hope these strategies are being used across the state of North Carolina - even in the deep red counties. We need to bank Hagan votes in urban areas, and hold down the Tillis lead in the red counties.
Please share your stories of canvassing in North Carolina - or any other state!
