I'm a registered Democrat in Colorado who hasn't yet turned in my ballot (Sorry - I'll be turning it in tomorrow!). This evening, I received a robocall - from a Google phone number where I couldn't verify the source - but that closed saying it was paid for by American (correction: Colorado) Lieberty PAC ... which is a right wing PAC that among other things claims that voter fraud is a major problem. Odd for a right-wing PAC to call a registered Democratic voter, right?
The recorded message warned me that criminals trying to steal my vote may be walking the neighborhood this weekend, offering to help deliver my vote etc., and that I should be on the lookout for these folks trying to commit voter fraud. Seems like a transparent effort to get Democractic voters frightened of the door-to-door GOTV volunteers we may be seeing between now and Tuesday. Since I haven't yet turned in my ballot, it is possible they are even targeting those Democratic voters who haven't yet voted knowing we will be targets for GOTV.
Now I agree with one thing in the message - I wouldn't give my completed ballot to somebody else to deliver for me. But sometimes it is necessary. I remember a past election day doing GOTV when I helped a Democratic voter who had broken her leg badly, was basically immobilized, and because it was after the deadline to request an absentee ballot she thought she couldn't vote. We helped her get an emergency absentee ballot which she completed and then we returned it to the county election office so that her vote could be counted. But what if she'd gotten a call like this before we knocked on her door?
Sounds like more voter suppression - this time trying to sabotage our Democratic GOTV volunteers before they go door-to-door this weekend. Any other Colorado Kossacks get this call? Am I overreacting?
A quick footnote:American Liberty PAC's website is touting James O'Keefe's efforts to entrap volunteers to "prove" that voter fraud is happening in Colorado ... the slimy video project that was written about in Hunter's previous diary.
Voter fraud isn't much of a threat - voter suppression is. GOTV!
Correction: not 2 Plato reports that the call actually is going out from Colorado Liberty PAC, another right wing outfit closely associated with Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, the group behind last year's recall elections in Colorado. I've removed the Rand Paul reference in both title and diary.
