Everyone seems to be asking today, "Well what the hell do we do now?" or "How do we stop this from happening again?" and "Why do our people never vote in of year elections?"
There's already been a lot written about this. Basically the answer is, "I don't know". Even the great Kos doesn't know how to proceed.
But ol' samfish does.
Let's start by watching this 17 minutes clip from John Oliver's most recent episode of Last Week Tonight...
Go on, watch it all. It's funny. You'll laugh, if nothing else. That's a good thing on a day like this:
There are three big takeaways from this video...
First, most of our local elected representatives are batshit crazy, regardless of what party they belong to.
Second, most of the action happening in America today is occuring at the state and local levels.
Third, a lot of these assholes run unopposed. Like a lot a lot. But I'd reckon that most of even the more hardcore inclined folks don't know how dumbfucked most of these people are.
You want to make this shit stop happening? Run for office yourself. Especially if you're crazy state representative ran unopposed this year. Because they're probably going to run unopposed again the next time due to the fact that no one gives a shit about local races.
So that's the answer. Look into running for state or local office.
Everybody do it. Just look up who serves your local House of Senate district. It's easy enough to do with Google. Hell, I'd bet most of you don't actually know who your state representatives are. I sure as shit didn't until I looked it up earlier today. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the two people who represent me in my state now.
And if your local state or house representative isn't crazier than a shit house rat, good on you. Support him or her. But we need to start paying attention to whats happening at the local and state levels, rather than just the federal levels.
Basically, be the change you seek.
