Just read a story that burns me. I'm a State of Florida employee and each year we have to go through mandatory ethics training. We lower employees have to be reminded that we're not allowed to take meals or cookies or anything else from people who do business with the state because it looks bad. Fair enough. But why does the chief law official in the state get away with it?
Two weeks before the election, a story broke in the Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald that Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi was flying around on corporate jets and feted in various resorts by lobbyists. This looked bad, but she got re-elected anyway. As a Republican strategist said, "Well, it does look bad, and if this was put on TV over and over, it would have an effect. But one big story in the Sunday newspaper? People won't see it."
Now another article appears and proves how unconcerned our Attorney General is. She states that she didn't break any law. The lobbyists did. What arrogance! She's going to serve out her second term and then likely move on to one of these lobbying firms herself. After all, she knows how they operate. Meanwhile, if someone drops off a box of a box of chocolates at Christmas at our state office to thank us for our help, it has to be refused because "ethics."
