I've been dropping back from blogging for awhile, because I'm up to my eyeballs in a major family crisis. But a story I heard today on the radio just blew my mind.

There are many others.
The synopsis is that there is a married couple, the Schmuhls, who live in Sterling, Virginia, right outside Washington, D.C. The husband, Andrew Schmuhl, is reported to be a former U.S. Army JAG officer (army lawyer) who was discharged more than two years ago and has been unable to find another job. He is also reported to be a "military intelligence officer," but that must be wrong, since JAGs aren't intelligence officers.
His wife is Alecia Schmuhl, a dual national of the United States and Hungary. She was working for a quite prominent large law firm in Arlington, Virginia. Just a few days ago she got fired for poor performance. Probably this put the couple in the position of not being able to afford their mortgage. But whatever--get a job.
So how did Bonnie & Clyde respond? Reportedly about four days ago they showed up at the McLean, Virginia home of the law firm's managing partner Leo Fisher, who looks like a nice guy and a mensch from what I've seen of him. Fisher is the managing partner of a large law firm and is very highly respected and awarded.
This is a very wealthy neighborhood with large houses set way back from the road on large lots. The Schmuhl husband reportedly entered the house by posing as a police officer and then immediately tasing 61-year-old Mr. Fisher, putting handcuffs on him, and then tying him into a chair. Mr. Fisher's wife Susan Duncan, also a lawyer, charged in after hearing the commotion, and reportedly she was also tasered and locked into a bathroom.
The evil husband went on to torture the couple for three or four hours with a knife, a gun, and a taser. He injured them so badly it is doubtful they'll survive, especially Mr. Fisher.
It is reported that Mr. Fisher was hurt so bad by knife wounds in the head and neck that he could not talk and gave the police a "dying declaration" in written notes. Fortunately, his wife was able to give police a clear description of the criminals and their car.
The evil couple was quickly apprehended after a pursuit around the D.C. beltway, which seems almost miraculous, and the cops found a strange scene! The evil husband was almost naked, sitting in the passenger seat in nothing but a diaper and covered in blood. His wife, who was driving, is also reported to have been covered in blood. In the back seat they found the man's bloody clothing, plus a gun, a knife, and a taser.
Reportedly the wife was captured on surveillance camera just a few days ago buying the taser at a gun store.
I'm pretty much speechless beyond this summary. The legal community in my area is pretty amazed and shook up.
