What do the words "busting down a door" bring to mind?
A violent breaking and entering?
A violent invasion of a building?
The calling card of big-box corporate businesses during the Thanksgiving weekend is "Doorbuster" sales on Friday.
The Black Friday ads for "Doorbusting" are an incitement to capitalist violence in the pursuit of consumption.
This year I will stand for an alternative Black Friday.
My Black Friday will be about the the failure of the legal system to prosecute the police killer of Michael Brown, and about protests against his killing, which have brought a clear focus and a spotlight upon the racial injustice that plagues the United States. We must keep a concentrated focus upon the racial injustice that is normalized in this country.
On Friday I will wear a black armband to pay my respects to Michael Brown, and to symbolize my resistance against the racist system that led to his killing and which has so far allowed his killer to walk free.
I hope that wearing a black armband will serve as something that opens up conversations with friends, family, and people I meet, about the need to radically reform the racist system that allows police and others to kill African-Americans with impunity.
We demand justice.
All lives matter.
Black lives matter.
