These days, its simpler to just shoot to kill.
An unfortunate tragedy. Outrage. Please protest peacefully. Department of Justice reviews. Federal consent decrees. Firings. Community policing. Diversity training. Money judgements (in a few states).
Over the course of my life I have heard and seen it all when it comes to the police and black people. And yet, police excess remains a rather routine part of life for black folks in America. It wont change, no matter how many riots, protests, attempts at reform, lawsuits, firings, and training classes are notched on the event timeline.
The bottom line is pretty simple: There is very little black folks can expect from national and even local officials of any party when it comes to the police. Because the root of the problem, who gets policed, how, and by whom, is never considered a part of the discussion. That is because the majority of white people are quite comfortable with the status quo. The answer is always going to be: black people should get policed, aggressively, and by people without the right temperament to be in the business of law enforcement. And occasionally by people who aren't even law enforcement at all.
Such is life when one is not labeled a 'model minority.'
I too believe the arc of the moral universe bends towards justice. But it is a very, very long arc. From a distance, or up close, it looks just like a straight line.
