As I’ve been trying to document in this space, inequality has a dangerous and corrosive effect on our lives, our economy, our kids, and what’s left of our democracy. That inequality is also why we cannot get out of our recession-depression.
Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor, has given us more evidence of the negative effect of massive concentrations of wealth on our lives, our futures, and our country.
In a new blog Reich said, “the top .01 percent’s donations to Democrats were more than four times larger than all labor union donations to Democrats put together.”
Wow. Wonder why the Democrats didn’t have an economic message in the last election? Wonder why we can’t raise the minimum wage when over 70 percent of Americans want it raised?
Wonder why Democrats as a party aren’t fighting for workers rights?
Remember this power of wealth is held by the top .01 percent — only 16,000 people each worth more than $110 million.
The bottom 90 percent own just 23 percent of America’s wealth.
How can that be anything but disastrous for any country? How can any form of democracy survive that kind of inequality and one sided political spending?
According to Robert Reich, the “top .01 percent [is] 220 times richer than the average American.”
And again this corrupt Supreme Court has allowed the wealthy to buy elections.
Democracy cannot be sustained just by elections in these massive inequities.
If you love your kids help us build a movement.
If you love America help us build a movement.
If you love your fellows humans, help us build a movement to stop this Empire of the Rich.
