KosAbility is a Sunday 7 pm eastkost/4 pm leftkost volunteer diarist community of, by & for people living with disabilities, who love someone with a disability, or who want to know more about the issues. Our use of "disability" includes temporary as well as permanent health/medical conditions — from small, gnawing problems to major, life-threatening ones. Our use of "love someone" extends to cherished members of other species.
Our discussions are open threads in the context of this community. Feel free to comment on the diary topic, ask questions of the diarist or generally to everyone, share something you've learned, tell bad jokes, post photos, or rage about your situation. Our only rule is to be kind; trolls will be spayed or neutered. If you are interested in contributing a diary, contact series coordinator postmodernista.

The unique needs of gender nonconforming children and adolescents require multidisciplinary psychological and medical care, according to a review of clinical practice guidelines for these youth.
..."Recognize that nonconforming gender identity itself is no longer considered pathologic," Dr. Stephen M. Rosenthal from U.C.San Francisco told Reuters Health... "However, many gender nonconforming youth experience significant distress (which can result in life-threatening behaviors, including suicidality) from the mismatch between their true gender identity and the gender identity that was assumed or assigned to them based on their physical sex characteristics present at birth. An approach to care that affirms the child or adolescent's gender identity is likely to have the best mental health outcome ... Given that an increasing number of gender nonconforming youth are presenting for health services, it is essential that pediatricians familiarize themselves with the issues faced by these youth and their families, and with approaches to optimal care.""
GAY & LESBIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
"Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality"
LGBT people have some unique health needs and concerns. Unfortunately, many health care providers don’t fully understand these issues, so it’s important to take charge of your health by asking your healthcare provider about the health matters that may apply to you.
The health issues listed in the factsheets are identified as most commonly of concern for LGBT people. While not all of these items apply to everyone, it is wise to be aware of these issues. The following lists will help you communicate even more effectively with your healthcare provider:
10 things Lesbians Should Discuss with Their Healthcare Provider
10 Things Gay Men Should Discuss with their Healthcare Provider

Sexual Assault, Gender-Based Violence, & Bullying
MEDSCAPE is a mostly-plain-English news & research report service geared for healthcare professionals but FREE to all who register - you can choose "Consumer" on the PROFESSIONS list in the registration process that starts when you first click on a Medscape link.
Picking multiple topics for email notification may flood your inbox, since a tremendous number of medical journals worldwide contribute articles to Medscape, so it's a good idea to start with few or just one notification topic, and see how it goes (or none, if you prefer access without emails).
Many Medscape articles are commentable - if you use a screen-name for privacy, it's worth devising one that won't undermine your own comments' impact.
Articles with videos of speakers provide a transcript below the vid window. Click sound off if you'd rather just read. Some articles are slideshows or quizes with accompanying text.
Keep in mind that the competitive nature of publishing can skew writing to suggest certainties not fully supported by findings, and there are always the basics to watch out for, e.g., "Many Studies Have 'Elementary Statistical Errors'" and It Ain't Necessarily So: Why Much of the Medical Literature Is Wrong and Data Re-analysis Changes 35% of Trial Conclusions and Published trial reports contain less than half of the patient-outcomes data contained in company-controlled documents, according to an analysis published online October 2013 in PLoS Medicine.. Medical science, like every realm of human endeavor, is a work in progress. Read critically for best results.
