"Cause of death: Homicide". This was on the death certificate ...of an Afghan taxi driver named Dilawar, beaten to death by American soldiers while being held in extrajudicial detention at the Parwan Detention Facility. (Wiki link)
Using the case of Dilawar as the starting point, documentary film maker Alex Gibney explores and exposes the truth of the torture programs run by the US military and the CIA.
"We have to work sort of the dark side, if you will. We've got to spend time in the shadows, in the intelligence world. A lot of what needs to be done here will have to be done quietly, without any discussion, using sources and methods that are available to our intelligence agencies. "
~Dick Cheney
Taxi won best documentary at the 2008 Academy Awards.
"This is dedicated to two people who are no longer with us, Dilawar, the young Afghan taxi driver, and my father, a navy interrogator who urged me to make this film because of his fury about what was being done to the rule of law. Let’s hope we can turn this country around, move away from the dark side and back to the light."
~ Frank Gibney accepting the Oscar
