What a wonderful gesture by the daughter of Eric Garner who was strangled by officer.
She went to the memorial site of the fallen officers. Made a statement supporting the families. Says she knows what that were going through and wanted to show her support for the senseless killings. Does not blame all cops. Has NYPD members in her family.
She actually says she supports the police, but as most of us wants justice for those who brake their trust with the public.
She is a strong young women. Violence is not the answer.
I believe that any attempt for the demonstrators to impede people from going about their business will only push the public away from making changes to police tactics.
People don't like to feel they are being coerced. As I wrote the other day...
The suffering and civil demonstrations by the likes of MLK highlighted the ill treatment of blacks. It was those dignified demonstrations and the violent backlash by the Southern hierarchy that got laws changed.
It was TV and magazines showing and telling us about Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney. It was firehoses and dogs. It was shooting someone trying to go to college. It was bombing and killing of little girls in their church. It was watching other children being lead into a school guarded by FBI agents. Those things educated and softened the hearts of the greater public.
As soon as there was violence (looting and burning of cities) after MLK's murder, Black Panthers threats, etc. public opinion changed.
Blacks are still a minority in this country (13.2% as of 2013 census - whites 62.6% when you exclude Latinos and Hispanics - 77% with them. Hispanics & Latinos when separated 17.1%). It will take many, many whites to help change the system.
Justice cannot be advanced by injustice.
