The marriage equality law in Scotland actually went into effect a couple of weeks ago, however there is a fifteen day waiting period (in Scotland) before the marriage ceremonies can take place. The wait is now over, and gay folks in the country are ringing in the new year with some fabulous gay weddings.

Same-sex couples in Scotland were able to start tying the knot Wednesday, as the law passed in March establishing legal marriage equality there went into effect. Couples have been able to enter civil partnerships since 2005, but now they can marry thanks to the update to the laws.
Joe Schofield and Malcolm Brown from Tullibody, Clackmannanshire were married in a humanist ceremony at Trades Hall shortly after midnight in front of friends and family in one of the first same-sex weddings on December 31 in Glasgow. Scotland's national poet Liz Lochhead and Scottish government minister Marco Biagi MSP attended the ceremony, BBC News reports.

A total of 250 couples have converted their civil partnerships to marriage since the new law - the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill - came into effect on 16 December.
Following the usual 15-day notice period for marriages, Hogmanay was the first day same-sex weddings could take place.
Scotland's first minister said: "This a momentous day for equality in Scotland, one where same sex couples have the right to marry the person that they love.
"This will send a powerful message to people about the kind of country we are."

11:41 AM PT: In other marriage equality news, an Orange County judge has ruled that the county clerk may issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples based on the Brenner decision in Florida rendered by Judge Hinkle.
