Although the first Tuesday of the month is often when I "borrow" a poem from my friend Lee McCormack, I decided to do it the second one this time, just because nothing came to my own mind in the way of poetry and the remainder of the day is calling me. Enjoy!
Kalliope
Means "beautiful voice" from Greek καλλος (kallos) "beauty" and οψ (ops) "voice". In Greek mythology she was a goddess of epic poetry and eloquence, one of the nine Muses.
Join us every Tuesday afternoon at the Daily Kos community political poetry club.
Your own poetry is always welcome in the comments.
Bongos, berets & turtle neck sweaters optional.
The keyboard is mightier than the sword.
Snowy Owl
How should I perceive her –
just another creature, wild, untamed
displaced by changing weather,
a physical manifestation
of spiritual force formed by nature
or as a source of sacred life
given to me as gift in daylight
on this Christmas Evening Day?
In the icy knife of wind that cut away
all hope of comfort, she came
fearlessly from whatever frozen land
has been home, and calmly gazed
into and through me as my hands
wiped sharp tears of light from my sight
to clear the sea glaze of blue-gray sky
while possessed by her golden-amber eyes.
Strange, how she penetrated this shell
of flesh on bone by simply staring;
how she made ordinary life transparent
as I fell from one self into another
world and dimension without caring
about the shadows and losses left behind.
How can I explain both myth and gift
that came to me just then, as if intended
by something greater than the sum
of all my lifetime? In her presence I can
only bow in praise of her creation, and ask:
Are you the one promised by the wind
and morning sun who comes dressed
in white to bless my joys and sorrow
before my shadow fades from sight,
the one who will carry me in final flight?
