I avoided using Facebook for years, because I didn't need to "connect", but when my family and online friends and then even Daily Kos started using Facebook connections more and more, I finally gave up last year and started using it, too.
I've been playing a lot of games (which I admit I like) and getting to 'know' some of my Daily Kos friends by their real world name, but even on Facebook I went with my Angie in WA State identity, because it's the only one I've EVER used online, for over a decade now.
Facebook let me create an account with Angie InWA State as the identity. It let me use this identity for over a year now.
But that ended today.
When I went to Facebook, I was logged out, which is unusual, as I maintain a "keep me logged in" presence on most websites (I loathe having to continually login to the same place day after day after day).
When I entered my password, the site wouldn't accept it, instead it sent me to this page:
As you can see, my email address (angie.in.wa.state) at gmail.com was there already, so my cookies were working and the site recognized me.
But when I put in my password, THIS happened:
So, I've used my Angie in WA State identity for over a decade. It's the only identity I have online, both here on Daily Kos, on Twitter on The NYTimes online and every other single online site which I've EVER used - excepting commercial sites where I purchase goods or services.
If I switched to my "real name" which Facebook is apparently now demanding, then NO ONE will know who I am.
If they hadn't allowed me to sign up anonymously in the first place, it would be one thing, but to allow me to use my sole online identity for years now and to suddenly demand I change it?
So, if you're friends with me on Facebook, this is my Why You Won't See Me There anymore notice.
UPDATE
Per the suggestion of Hayate Yagami in the comments, I tried the Angie Inwastate variant and Facebook ASSBook took it. So I CAN use Facebook again now.
The question is, do I want to?
I don't know. I MAY perhaps continue to send Daily Kos Shares there. But as for using it directly, I'll have to think long and hard about that.
