A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Let's start the working week (a short week for most of us)
with a Moral Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
Have you seen any of the MLK biography movies?
I hope to see Selma today.
Selma was on my calendar for last weekend, its opening weekend, but my schedule got away from me. All last week I kept looking for another day to get to it, but cold weather made it difficult and a couple of uncontrollable emergencies made it impossible.
The so-called snubs at the Golden Globes and the Oscar nominations don't mean anything to me. Some of my all time favorite movies never won any of those kinds of awards. Awards might help attract a wider audience, but in the current highly-tense racial climate of the country, I doubt it.
I am interested in that part of our country's history, and I want to support a black female director, and reviews have been really good, especially for David Oyelowo as King. Just as with Lincoln, there are people complaining about historical inaccuracies, but that always happens with this kind of film. Any film except for the most scrupulously edited documentary will have discrepancies with the lived reality.
Believe it or not, stores are beginning to have MLK weekend sales! Some of them are calling them "long weekend sales" or "holiday sales" without mentioning which holiday, but this is the first year I have noticed sales being advertised... the commercialism has begun. The usual items that are on sale at this time of year--clothing, linens, furniture, fitness equipment, are trying to benefit from the three day weekend. I am looking for a more meaningful way to observe the MLK holiday than a day off for shopping, but I don't have the stamina to do a volunteer day today, so my observation of the holiday will be limited to watching movies.
I've said previously how much I enjoyed the TV movie "Boycott" starring Jeffrey Wright as King. People associate King with the 1960s and the March on Washington but the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955, when he was In a different world, I could go on Comcast today and see suggested movies for this holiday that would include Boycott, but that day is a lonnng way off.
If you want to watch something about MLK today and can't get out to the movies, someone has uploaded the entirety of the 2004 American Experience program "Citizen King".
It has a ton of documentary footage and first-person remembrances with historic figures in their very younger days.
It is broken up into 7 and 8 and 9 minute segments, but if you can deal with that, you can watch a pretty good PBS documentary for free on YouTube today.
Have you seen Selma? Or Boycott? Or Citizen King? Do you have another commercial film, made for TV movie or documentary to recommend, or links to something on line that people can watch?
Have you seen any MLK biography movies?

by Thinking Fella ♥ for Four Corners Kossacks
There are meet-ups and then, there are EPIC meet-ups. The current designate always upstages the previous one. And that is precisely what Thinking Fella has done with this event. We were all green with envy when he announced it with just a few short weeks notice. He had a fantastic turnout anyway. Try to top this event. With 58 scenic photos of gorgeous Colorado and wonderful Kossacks, Thinking Fella showed us who's boss when it comes to meet-ups. He holds the trophy now. Who wants to take it away from him? Throw your gauntlet down at any time.
It's important to note that this terrific diary inspired 8 more people to join the Four Corners Kossacks. Again, Thinking Fella knows what he's doing. High five, buddy!
