You know when one of "our" Senators has to say:
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee's Social Security subcommittee, said that Democrats shouldn't be willing to negotiate after House Republicans have stated outright that they want to pursue changes to the program.
And then has to point out the obvious
"They want to dramatically slice Social Security, so we negotiate and compromise a small cut in Social Security?" Brown told TPM. "No, that's not the way you negotiate."
Then tell us people have learnt from past mistakes:
"They compromised on something because they thought good things would happen from it, and the Republicans pulled out," he said. "The administration knows they want to protect Social Security. They know they need to protect the disabled people on Social Security."
I always assumed that Social Security was a corner stone of Democratic Party principles and that everyone knows that it is a non-negotiable as far as they are concerned.
Sherrod Brown does not appear to be addressing the Republican Party but rather addressing both the White House and his own party.
One can only assume each time this statement is made that some on our side of the aisle think it is a good time to cave, perhaps the Republican Party will give the some candy.
So pardon me if I seem worried. There are reasons for my worry, past experience being one.
