Last week, Nancy Meyer mentioned the case of Pat McPherson, a member of the Nebraska State Board of Education who recently came under fire for horribly bigoted comments in his blog, "Objective Conservative." Among other things, no fewer than five posts called President Obama a "half-breed." There have been bipartisan calls for him to resign, but he isn't willing to back down. Looks like it's time to put a little pressure on him. Tell McPherson that it's time for him to go. This got lost in the buzz prior to the State of the Union, so I'm reposting here.
As I mentioned at Liberal America, no fewer than five posts since 2011 called Obama a "half-breed"--and three of them were only signed "Objective Conservative." McPherson deleted all posts since he first set it up in 2007 and disavowed the sentiments expressed in the "half-breed" posts--but so far has refused to say who of the six or seven other posters made them.
Governor Pete Ricketts has called for him to resign, as have the state Democratic Party, the editorial board of the Lincoln Journal Star, and the Omaha and Lincoln chapters of the NAACP. But McPherson refuses to resign because--are you sitting down?--if he did, he'd be admitting he's a racist when he isn't one. He also claims he hasn't broken the law. Um, Pat? Laws only set the bar below which you go to jail. Just because you may be within the law doesn't mean your behavior is acceptable.
McPherson has been incommunicado since last week. But it's time to turn up the pressure. At the very least, McPherson failed to exercise the most basic oversight over his blog. And his failure to own up to who made these posts is at least as bad as the original posts. It's time for him to go. Sign here.
